What is PICA?

PICA (ABN: 91 002 962 754) is a national association of the senior management of companies actively involved in importing, manufacturing and distributing photographic and imaging equipment. Its objective is to grow the imaging business. It continually examines ways in which companies in competition with each other can work together for the benefit of the industry as a whole.

How often does PICA meet?

Three meetings are held each year at three monthly intervals. Two of the meetings are held in Sydney and one in Melbourne. The meetings are generally completed within two hours and additional time is provided for networking.

What does PICA do?

LOBBYING: PICA lobbies Government on State and Federal levels on issues concerning the distribution of photographic, video and audio visual equipment. Past and current lobbying activity covers import tariffs, copyright, sales tax rates, the rights to sell duty free and a review of the duty and sales tax on private imports. Usually, the industry retains top professional lobbyists to represent its interests.

INDUSTRY STATISTICS: PICA retains an independent bureau, Informark Pty Ltd, to compile statistical sales information on an anonymous basis. A monthly media monitor covering a wide variety of equipment and accessories is distributed each month to the scheme providers. Special industry surveys are also conducted from time to time through Ernst & Young.

INDUSTRY PROMOTION: PICA is always looking for opportunities to promote image making as part of the Australian way of life. Past activities include sponsoring photography exhibitions, producing a video and running television campaigns. PICA is also the founder of a series of regular photographic industry shows which promote picture making to consumers, professionals and professional users of images such as advertising agencies, government departments and production houses.

PURE: PICA maintains a sub-division called PURE (Photographic Uniform Regulations for the Environment) which meets to assist water boards and environment bodies around Australia with the handling of photographic chemical waste.

How is PICA funded and administered?

PICA has acquired a solid based working capital from the profits it makes from industry show organisation. The monies raised are invested back into the industry. A management board meets to execute the wishes of the membership. Membership fees are $500 per annum plus a $350 joining fee.
